Texas Polygamist Sect Trial0

After hearing about the case in Texas, my home state, in which 416 children were rescued from a polygamist camp, I am horrified to think that such a place ever existed. I don’t know how so many children could have been abducted and held in such a place without anyone ever knowing. Apparently, there are court documents that prove the marriage of young females held in this camp to older men. I don’t understand how no one knew that this was going on.

How could these people who claim to be a part of the Mormon church think that such acts are pleasing to God? The Bible clearly states that polygamy is wrong and that sex is for a man and wife, not wives. Plus, many of these children are under 18, which means they are cannot legally consent to such a marriage.

What is going on with the world today?

Should Yahoo Accept Microsoft’s Bid?0

Will the merger of these two companies be beneficial for both? Microsoft has offered $41 billion for the buyout but Yahoo has yet to accept.

Why do you think they are so hesitant?

Microsoft is giving Yahoo a few more weeks to secure the deal and if not, they will move on. What do you think Yahoo should do?

New Jobs for the stars of The Hills0

Previously working at Teen Vogue, Hills stars Whitney Port and Lauren Conrad move to fashion PR agency People’s Revolution. The third season of the show will be exposing the inner workings of this organization as the girls take on different assignments. Clients of the company have also agreed to participate in the show. So will this kind of publicity help the company and its clients gain attention?

I think that companies participating in such a popular show will benefit them greatly. It is important to appeal to different audiences; thus, taking this opportunity is almost like free advertisement. However, companies do run the risk of potential bad press associated with the icons they choose to represent it.

Murder that Rocked Our Campus0

Almost a week ago, we were informed that a freshman girl was murdered and her body dumped a mile from our campus. Students as well as the Auburn community were shocked that such a terrible crime could be committed in such a safe community. Our first thoughts were that this must have been a targeted incident, and that Lauren Burk must have known her attacker. However, we recently discovered the opposite. Lauren Burk was the victim of an armed robbery which led to her murder. This random act of violence has really shocked our community because students realize that it very easily could have been us, instead of Lauren.

Although we have always felt safe in Auburn, it is so important for our students to remember that there are bad people everywhere in this world. No one should be walking alone anywhere at night. And, everyone should always be aware of their surroundings. We will continue to pray for the family and friends of Lauren Burk, and she will always be remembered.

Wendy’s Shooting0

Today in West Palm beach, a man walked into the bathroom of a Wendy’s restaurant and came out with a gun. He proceeded in killing one person and wounding four others before killing himself. Some of the survivors are now in critical condition.

Although Wendy’s representatives are coorperating with the police, does an event like this make the corporation look bad or are they just an innocent victim? It is hard to determine which is the case because events such as this makes Wendy’s restaurants appear to be unsafe. Press coverage of this event could also be seen as negative. So, should Wendy’s reps try to save face or just let the situation unfold?

2008 Academy Awards0

According to the ratings, last night’s show was not a major hit with viewers. Although the least watched Oscar’s show was in 2003, the public’s opinion of the award show is not too high. Why was this the case?

The four major acting awards, best lead actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress, went to foreign born stars. This has not occurred since 1964. Did this have an impact on the viewers of the show? Should only American born stars be eligible for such awards? If not, then why did so few people find the show appealing?

George H.W. Bush Endorses McCain0

On Monday, Feb. 18, former president George H.W. Bush endorsed John McCain’s campaign for presidency. Until recently, the Republican party has struggled to define its strongest candidate. Polls have been back and forth among the few top candidates, but now McCain has stepped up. He is now the front runner for the Republicans and will most likely win the nomination.

Like Oprah’s support for Obama and Bill Clinton’s support for his wife, this celebrity endorsement seems to have become a popular tactic in the run for presidency. But, does it really work?

Marc Jacobs: Victim or Felon?0

New York fashion week is no longer the buzz. Attention has been turned to the recent scandal involving Marc Jacobs and alleged bribes. The statements claim that Marc Jacobs International may have paid up to $30,000 in bribes to the Lexington Avenue Armory, which is where Jacobs’ fashion shows have been held in the past. Many articles have been written about the scandal, most portraying Jacobs as a victim. So, was he involved or aware of these bribes or is he truly a victim?  And why is it not just as wrong to offer a bribe as it is to receive one? In my opinion, the initiator should incur just as much responsibility.
Involved or not, Jacobs should release a statement to clear his name or admit fault. Especially if innocent, this bad press could ruin his reputation forever and cause the public to always speculate about what goes on in his company behind closed doors.
Just like in the events of Enron and Worldcom, ethics play a huge role in modern day business practices. It is always better to err on the careful side rather than risk ruining a reputation.

Target Scandal: Advertising vs. New Social Media0

While I recognize the importance of traditional media, part of doing business involves staying up to date with the latest trends. Thus, companies should be striving to recognize blogging as a legitimate means of communication. Although it does not reach the kind of mass audience that advertising can, blogs have become a crucial part of getting information directly to customers. Buyers do not always want to be sold to. They want information about the product, service, site, etc. before they commit to participate. Reaching these buyers directly with information comes through new social media tactics such as blogging and podcasts, not through advertising. However, I do not believe that advertising is a thing of the past. For example, Superbowl ads reach more people in thirty seconds than a blog ever could. However, I think that companies should recognize the importance of both and not shut out potential customers because it fails to recognize “nontraditional media sources.”

Student Recruiter0

I am experimenting with social media blogs. In this video, Natalie Stuckey tells us about life as a Student Recruiter for Auburn University. She spends her time in this organization representing Auburn and trying to convince high school students that Auburn is right for them.
